Cooking instructions
* Step 1
Using a wooden spoon, mix the flour, sugar, salt, zest and yeast together in a large mixing bowl.
* Step 2
Add chunks of butter and incorporate it into the mix using your fingers.
* Step 3
Microwaving the milk for 45-60 seconds will help it warm up if been in the fridge.
* Step 4
Once the butter is fully incorporated, add the milk and beaten egg together and then add into the mix.
* Step 5
Once the dough begins to come together knead on a floured surface with lightly floured hands.
* Step 6
Knead for 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Form a smooth ball and allow to prove in a warm place for 60 minutes. (between 35-40°C and no more than 45°C)
* Step 7
Cut a quarter of the dough away to make the braid, reserve for later.
* Step 8
Roll the remaining three quarters into a long roll with tapered ends. It should be about 1.5 inches thick or a metre long.
* Step 9
Line a baking tray with baking paper.
* Step 10
On the tray, fold the roll into a pretzel shape.
* Step 11
Filling the gaps with foil should help prevent the holes closing up when the bread expands in the oven.
* Step 12
Divide the smaller piece of dough into 3 equal pieces. Rolling each piece thinly to a length of about 50 cm.
* Step 13
Pinch the 3 ends together.
* Step 15
Pinch the remaining three ends like in step 13.
* Step 16
Prepare to lay the braid on top of the pretzel, but first cover that portion in Nutella.
* Step 17
Once the braid is laid, beat an egg well and brush the whole pretzel with the egg wash.
* Step 18
Sprinkle with granulated sugar.
* Step 19
Bake at 200°C or 180°C Fan for about 25 minutes or until bronze/golden brown.
* Step 20
If your foil gets stuck in the pretzel like mine did, you can easily remove it when you cut it up to serve, enjoy :)
