Bread Bowls
Used to be able to order chicken stew in a Bread bowl at a restaurant. They no longer sell it, so it was time to make our own. We make our chicken stew in bulk and freeze it in food saver bags. This way we always have hearty stews on hand. Now with the bread bowls, you have 1 less thing to wash. The fact that it is tasty doesn't hurt.
Cooking instructions
* Step 1
In a large bowl add 1 cup warm water, 1 tbsp sugar and sprinkle in yeast. Set aside to “proof” or get foamy, about 10 minutes.
* Step 2
Pour into stand mixer, add melted butter, remaining sugar and salt and mix until combined. Gradually add flour. Knead with your mixer or by hand for about 5 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic.
* Step 3
Place in a large greased bowl. Cover, place in oven with light on and allow to rise until doubled, (about 45 minutes)
* Step 4
After first rise, punch dough down and form into 6 equal sized balls. Place dough balls on a greased cookie sheet and lightly cover with plastic wrap. Let rise once more for about 20-30 minutes.
* Step 5
Preheat oven to 425°F and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown
* Step 6
Allow to cool and then cut out the top.
* Step 7
Using your hands, press the dough inside the ball firmly to the bottom and sides.
* Step 8
Fill with you favorite stew or chili (we used my homemade chicken stew)
