Cooking instructions
* Step 1
Sift flour onto wax paper, measure, add baking powder, and salt in a small bowl. Sift together three times.
* Step 2
Melt chocolate and shortening (alternatively vegetable oil) in the top of a double boiler (alternatively a saucepan and metal bowl). If using saucepan, place chocolate and oil in the metal bowl and place the bowl in the saucepan of boiling water. Keep here until chocolate is fully melted.
* Step 3
Remove from the boiling water to cool slightly.
* Step 4
Meanwhile, beat the eggs in a small bowl. Add the sugar and vanilla. Mix thoroughly. Then, place this mixture into the metal bowl of chocolate mixture.
* Step 5
Add the dry ingredients in the chocolate mixture and blend well.
* Step 6
If nuts are desired, add them in this step and stir enough to mix.
* Step 7
Spread the mixture in a greased pan 8x8x2 inches.
* Step 8
Place in the oven at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.
* Step 9
Check to make sure the brownies are done by inserting a toothpick into the center. If it comes out runny or with any liquid at all, it is not done. If it comes out clean and dry, then it is done.
* Step 10
Cut into squares after the brownies have been out of the oven for 15 minutes.
