Chana Dal

Cooking instructions

* Step 1

Wash and rinse the chana dal until water runs clear

* Step 2

Then allow to soak for a minimum of 30 minutes, the longer the better

* Step 3

Then add the chana dal, 2 cups of water, turmeric and salt to a pressure cooker. Cook until the dal is soft, do not drain the water

* Step 4

In a pan, add the oil and allow to heat up before adding the cumin seeds and chilli powder. Allow to cook until the cumin seeds begin to pop

* Step 5

Add in the green chilli, onion, garlic, ginger and tomatoes before cooking for 2-3 minutes until all soft

* Step 6

Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, asafoetida and amchur powder (optional). Taste and adjust for salt

* Step 7

Add the dal and kasuri methi to the masala and cook to desired consistency

* Step 8

Take off the heat and stir in chopped coriander, serve with basmati rice, naan, roti, etc.
