Idiyappam (String Hopper)

Easy South Indian Breakfast Recipe. Idiyappam is an easy to make and delicious South Indian steamed rice noodle. Made simply from rice flour. It is perfect to enjoy with delicious curries. Served with Crab Curry.

Ingredient

2 cups

Water

1 tsp

Oil

1/4 tsp

Salt

Cooking instructions

* Step 1

Firstly, in a pan, add oil to the water and bring it to a boil. Once the water starts boiling, turn off the flame.

* Step 2

In a separate bowl, add the rice flour, salt and mix well. Add about 3/4 cup of hot water to the rice flour. Stir with a spatula.

Continue to add the water little by little to the rice flour and mix well until a soft, smooth and non-sticky dough is formed.

Once you are able to handle the dough by hand, knead it nicely for 1-2 minutes. Grease the inside portion of the idiyappam press. Grease your palm with oil. Take a portion of the dough, smoothen it out in your palm and fill it in the press.

Grease the steamer plate. Gently press the idiyappam dough on to the steamer plate.

Steam the idiyappam for about 5 minutes, until cooked through. Let the idiyappam cool down a bit. Gently remove from the steamer plate and transfer to a serving plate.

Enjoy immediately with a side of any curry dish. Idiyappam served with crab curry.
